BreNita Jackson McCord, MSW—Executive Director

BreNita has served as Odyssey’s Executive Director since January 2009. At a young age, BreNita developed a passion for helping and serving others. After graduating from high school one year early, she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Dayton and a Master of Social Work Degree from the University of Georgia.

BreNita possesses a diverse work background encompassing over twenty years in the non-profit sector. One thing that has remained the same is her role has always been grounded in helping and serving others. Early in her career she worked as a Social Worker, Senior Social Worker and Director of Social Services in DFCS and hospital/healthcare settings which led to an opportunity to lead a large, private healthcare facility. Her leadership continued at Genesis Shelter and of her fifteen year tenure, she was the Executive Director for ten. With BreNita at the helm, Genesis raised $5.1 million in their capital campaign which allowed the purchase of property, renovation and program expansion. Other contributions include leadership and development of forty-two staff members and twenty-four interns, annual multi-million dollar budget responsibilities, supervision, development and implementation of the Five Star Vocation Project, and advocacy for homeless women and children.

BreNita places high importance on learning and has continued doing so by becoming a recipient of the Harvard Business Club of Atlanta Executive Education Scholarship. Always concerned about the community she serves, she has participated in community leadership classes in the counties of Douglas and presently Dekalb, in addition to the City of Savannah. She served as Community Leader Judge for Atlanta Benefits Humana for three years. Likewise, she has also been recognized as “Woman of the Week” by Atlanta’s Women Magazine and served as regional conference leader at seminars focusing on women’s issues.

BreNita believes that Odyssey’s work is an important, divine work as it produces healthy individuals and families. Her vision for Odyssey is to continue excellent service delivery to our communities. BreNita enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, volunteering at her church and cooking in her spare time.
