The victims of violent crime often struggle with debilitating emotional issues for years. Lost jobs, broken homes, addiction, loss of child custody, and homelessness are some of the consequences of their personal struggles. Lacking employment and health insurance, these individuals have no where to go for help.

Odyssey believes in making counseling accessible to individuals overcoming grievous victimization. Trauma recovery and related services are free for the 1st ten services for all victims of violent crime. Support groups and individual counseling are also available to those who have lost a family member due to violence.

Survivor’s Group
Odyssey’s Survivors Group is for adult females with histories of child sexual abuse. The overall goal of the group is to provide an emotionally and physically safe place for victims of abuse to:

  • express feelings and be heard

  • have themselves and their experience validated

  • acquire additional understanding of their experience

  • develop and practice effective coping skills for handling current issues

  • explore what it means to have a healthy relationship

  • recognize strategies for moving from victim to survivor status

  • give and receive support

  • heal from trauma

The Survivor’s Group will meet Tuesdays from 5-6pm at the College Park office. Please contact Sheri Miller, LMSW for more information or to schedule an assessment.

Family Survivors of Homicide Group

While there is no such thing as a painless death of a loved one, families that have experienced the trauma of homicide undergo unique reactions that often require some form of professional help. The suddenness and violence of these deaths can have devastating effects on families. Feelings of anger and rage, sadness and guilt, pain and confusion are combined in a confusing whirlwind of emotion that leaves family members isolated, alone, and frightened.

Individuals who come to Odyssey and participate in specialized services are able to hear stories of other “survivors” and share their own stories of tragedy and grief. This allows the family to begin to chart a course through the grief and pain to recover and function once more. Comments from families include:

  • “Odyssey helped my family get back together and understand that the violence that happened was not our fault”
  • "Helping me feel safe and realize that there are real people in the world who really care and can actually be trusted and believed.”
  • “We tend to be less tense because we feel like Odyssey cares about us.”
“Through the program, I was able to express feelings that I couldn’t face in the past—without fear or shame.”
  • “It’s safe to think and feel here.”
