Family Survivors of Homicide Group
While there is no such thing as a painless death of a loved one, families that have experienced the trauma of homicide undergo unique reactions that often require some form of professional help. The suddenness and violence of these deaths can have devastating effects on families. Feelings of anger and rage, sadness and guilt, pain and confusion are combined in a confusing whirlwind of emotion that leaves family members isolated, alone, and frightened.
Individuals who come to Odyssey and participate in specialized services are able to hear stories of other “survivors” and share their own stories of tragedy and grief. This allows the family to begin to chart a course through the grief and pain to recover and function once more. Comments from families include:
- “Odyssey helped my family get back together and understand that the violence that happened was not our fault”
- "Helping me feel safe and realize that there are real people in the world who really care and can actually be trusted and believed.”
- “We tend to be less tense because we feel like Odyssey cares about us.”
“Through the program, I was able to express feelings that I couldn’t face in the past—without fear or shame.”
- “It’s safe to think and feel here.”
